Facilitating Ohio's Energy Alternatives
Third Frontier Alternative Energy Projects
From the Third Frontier Program web site:

Governor Taft unveiled The Third Frontier Project in February 2002. This project is the state’s largest-ever commitment to expanding Ohio’s high-tech research capabilities and promoting innovation and company formation that will create high-paying jobs for generations to come. The 10-year, $1.6 billion initiative designed to:

  • Build world-class research capacity
  • Support early stage capital formation and the development of new products
  • Finance advanced manufacturing technologies to help existing industries become more productive

Here are the Third Frontier Alternative Energy Projects that EMTEC has played a role in (in no particular order).

2005

“Enabling Low Cost MEA Manufacturing for PEM Fuel Cells in Ohio”
  • Develop and commercialize manufacturing processes for PEM fuel cells (Membrane Electrode Assembly) via tunable catalyzation and low cost manufacturing processes.
  • Members of the project team include EMTEC, Faraday Technology Inc., Precision Energy & Technology and Case Western Reserve University.
“Auxiliary Power for Transportation: High Power Density SOFCs”
  • Develop a self-supporting fuel cell for use in solid oxide fuel cells expected to achieve up to 5 times the power density of today’s state of the art cells.
  • Members of the project team include NexTech Materials, Ltd., SOFCo-EFS, EMTEC and NASA Glenn.
“Development, Manufacturing, and Commercialization of World-Class Comprehensive Fuel Cell Test Systems within Ohio”
  • Develop, manufacture and commercialize the next generation of fuel cell test systems within Ohio.
  • Members of the project team include Mound Technical Solutions, Inc., Case Western Reserve Univ., University of Dayton Research Institute, Sinclair Community College, Battelle, Inorganic Specialists, EMTEC and Miamisburg Mound Community Improvement Corporation.

2006

“Design for Manufacturability of TMI’s SOFC System”
  • Commercialization of the Technology Management, Inc. solid oxide fuel cell systems technology as a clean, quiet auxiliary power unit.
  • Members of the project team include EMTEC, Technology Management, Inc., Precision Energy & Technology, Ricardo, Remy and W. W. Williams.
“Low Cost, High Temperature Heat Exchanger and Reactor Platform for Fuel Cell Applications”
  • Prepare for market entry of a heat exchanger module capable of operating at 950 degrees Celsius and suitable for use with solid oxide fuel cells.
  • Members of the project team include Catacel Corporation, Patriot Engineering, Creative Processing and EMTEC.
“Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells for Munitions”
  • Design, build and test a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane fuel cell-based power source for the US Army’s latest smart munitions fuze, the Precision Guidance Kit.
  • Members of the project team include Pemery Corp., EMTEC, IMAX Industries, Inc., Alliant TechSystems, Inc., KDI Precision Products, Inc., BT Fuze Products and the US Army.
“Development of Ohio-Based Mass Manufacturing of Air-Cooled Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells”
  • Develop and utilize computer simulation models to optimize decisions and resource allocations for an accelerated manufacturing facility for multi-megawatt fuel cell systems.
  • Members of the project team include HydroGen Corporation, EMTEC and Storm Software, Inc.
