Facilitating Ohio's Energy Alternatives

Wind Energy

What can EMTEC do for you?
Since 1887, when Charles Brush began construction of the world's first electricity - producing windmill in Cleveland, Ohio has been contributing to the growth of the wind power industry. EMTEC helps to create a path from innovation to commercialization with concise project management and technical expertise. Through partnerships with Ohio Department of Development and the Ohio Wind Working Group, EMTEC provides stable support for companies to pursue commercialization of their turbine designs while also creating opportunities for companies to sell parts in the broader wind energy supply chain.

What is the state of the wind industry?
Since the advent of wind energy, the cost per kwh to generate electricity from large wind farms has over time become very competitive with conventional fossil fuel powered electricity supplies. While much of Ohio would not be considered a great wind resource, Lake Erie is among the best spots in the nation to harness the wind. Many systems are located off-shore since wind over water is generally higher velocity.

Reversing Winds: America's Rediscovery of Manufacturing
Wind : 06/13/2008
Over the past three years, the U.S. wind industry has enjoyed a relatively stable policy environment. The federal production tax credit (PTC), the primary economic driver for wind, has been in place without interruption since August 2005 -- after being extended for two years in the energy policy act of 2005, and extended for one additional year (through 2008) at the end of 2006. In addition, more than 10 additional state renewable energy standard (RES) programs have been put into place, bringing the total number of states with an RES to 26 plus the District of Columbia. During that time, total wind capacity grew by 150% and the annual market size more than doubled.... more

Utilities Owning, Buying More Wind, Planning for Carbon Regulations
Wind : 06/09/2008
Utilities are increasingly embracing wind -- owning their own facilities, buying wind-generated electricity from other producers, and even factoring future carbon regulation into their financial equations, said expert participants on a utility panel at WINDPOWER 2008.... more

U.S. Continues to Lead the World in Wind Power Growth
Wind : 06/03/2008
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today released the 2007 edition of its Annual Report on U.S. Wind Power Installation, Cost, and Performance Trends, which provides a comprehensive overview of developments in the rapidly evolving U.S. wind power market. Notably, the report finds that U.S. wind power capacity increased by 46 percent in 2007, with $9 billion invested in U.S. wind plants in 2007 alone, making the U.S. the fastest-growing wind power market in the world for the third straight year. The report also showed that wind is on a path to becoming a significant contributor to the U.S. power mix, wind projects accounted for 35 percent of all new U.S. electric generating capacity in 2007, and transmission facilities capable of generating a total of over 200 GW of wind power are in the early stages of development throughout the nation.... more
