“And all the resources in the world, without a focused concentration on commercializing the promise of technology will not result in sustained high-wage job creation for Ohio.” This is excerpted from the Ohio Business Roundtable’s “A Prospectus for Achieving Success in the Third Frontier”, June 2003. At EMTEC, we combine Leadership, Experience, Focus, and Commitment of all the employees in the company to “accelerate technologies to commercialization.”
As illustrated in the EMTEC Commercialization Model shown below, we combine the seeking, finding, filtering of new technologies (pushes) with the seeking, finding, filtering of commercialization sources (pulls) to more rapidly execute getting a technology to the Ohio manufacturing community. We call this combination Linking. “Push” sources include the technologies developed at the Air Force Research Laboratories where EMTEC has a full time employee working day to day with AFRL engineers and scientists to determine the most probable technologies to introduce to the “Pulls.” “Pull” sources include the 120 members of EMTEC, most of which are Ohio companies. EMTEC has a wide spread contact base throughout the state in addition to our membership.
As shown on the left side of the diagram, EMTEC has access to State, Federal, and private funds to effect the commercialization of new materials associated technologies. Commercialization can be relatively simple, taking the straight forward form of licensing or go many steps further in actually setting up a company (NewCo) centered on a new technology. Important parts of EMTEC at the commercialization stage are the regional Manufacturing Technology Small Business Development Center (MTSBDC) and the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC). These professionals work with all the parties to provide guidance in designing the necessary business structure toward becoming a successful venture.
