STEM Scholarship Program (EMTEC SSP) in Alternative Energy

Background

In 2007 The Edison Materials Technology Center (EMTEC) celebrates its 20th year of collaboratively working with academia, federal labs, and industry to accelerate materials and related technology to commercialization. Ohio and our region face many challenges in today’s global business environment. We have seen a significant decline in manufacturing jobs, increased global competition for both products and ideas, an increased demand and cost for energy, and fewer and fewer students enrolled in engineering, sciences, and math at our colleges and universities.

Education, jobs, and low cost available energy are necessary and key to our future as a region, state, and nation. Ohio has a long and proud history of technology based innovation. Sadly, today we are losing new and breakthrough ideas and inventions to others and our lead as a nation of innovators and technology leaders is being challenged. We all must redouble our efforts to develop future generations of our “best and brightest”. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are the backbone of technological and industrial growth for our region and nation. Our future is predicated on investments and choices that we make today.

EMTEC SSP Concept

To commemorate EMTEC’s 20 th Anniversary and as an indication of our support for Ohio’s STEM initiative, EMTEC today is announcing the creation of an EMTEC STEM Scholarship Program in Alternative Energy (EMTEC SSP). The EMTEC SSP will work in conjunction with our regional and state colleges and universities to identify academically superior students with an interest in alternative energy. Following an interview and selection process at EMTEC these students will be awarded $10,000 for their upcoming scholastic year that will be used to offset their collegiate tuition. As part of the requirements for receiving the scholarship, EMTEC SSP scholars will be required to work paid internships at EMTEC of at least 13 weeks prior to the scholastic year in which they receive the scholarship allowing the scholar to earn additional income to that of the scholarship. EMTEC will award up to two (2) $10,000 EMTEC SSP STEM scholarships per scholastic year.

EMTEC SSP Eligibility Criteria

The following summarizes eligibility requirements for the EMTEC SSP. All EMTEC SSP candidates/applicants must:

• Be a full time junior or senior student at a four year Ohio college or university majoring in a STEM discipline. Graduate students will be eligible only if they were prior EMTEC SSP scholarship recipients.
• Maintain a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) for the prior 2 or 3 years at the institution.
• Have a Department Chair letter of recommendation.
• Be matriculated in a STEM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).

EMTEC SSP Application Process

Interested candidates wishing to apply for the EMTEC SSP may apply in writing not later than April 15 prior to the start of the candidate’s Junior or Senior collegiate year. Applications shall include a candidate letter describing candidate’s specific interests in alternative energy studies, a certified school transcript showing academic coursework and grades earned in STEM curricula, and a letter of recommendation from the STEM Department Chair. EMTEC will review all applications and letters of selection will be mailed to EMTEC SSP scholarship winners no later than one (1) month following the application deadline.
